Symptom: A clunk from the rear when you accelerate or shift, grinding or vibration, and in the worst case a loss of drive, or the vehicle rolling while in Park unless the parking brake is set.
Likely causes
- Broken bolt. Ford recalled 2020–2022 Explorers because the rear axle mounting bolt can fracture. Explorer ST Forum owners collected the failure reports.
- The first fix was software. It sets the electric parking brake automatically in Park. Later recalls added hardware fixes and corrected repairs that weren't done properly.
- Follow-on damage, such as to the differential cover, is checked under the later recall.

Useful steps
- Look up your VIN now. Several recalls apply, and some vehicles were repaired incorrectly the first time.
- Set the parking brake every time you park until it's fixed.
- If you hear a new clunk from the rear, stop driving and have it inspected.
Vehicle focus: 2020–2022 Ford Explorer.
Safety / mechanic note
Losing drive, or a vehicle that rolls away, can cause injuries. Verify with a dealer and always use the parking brake.
