Symptom: A crack starts from a tiny chip, or seemingly from nothing, and runs toward the edge of the glass, sometimes overnight.
Likely causes
- The original glass. Subaru settled a class action over cracking windshields. According to our search results, the extension covers one qualifying replacement for up to 8 years or 100,000 miles from the date the car was first sold. The windshield must be the original Subaru glass and the crack has to meet the settlement's definition.
- Ordinary rock chips that spread.
Cost
A qualifying crack is replaced at no cost under the settlement. Otherwise, your insurance's glass coverage may pay. Either way, the EyeSight cameras must be recalibrated afterward.
DIY or shop?
Shop, because EyeSight has to be recalibrated.
Useful steps
- Photograph the crack and where it started.
- Contact a Subaru retailer about the windshield warranty extension.
- Confirm EyeSight was recalibrated after the replacement.
Vehicle focus: 2019–2023 Subaru Forester.
Safety / mechanic note
The windshield helps hold up the roof and supports the airbag, and EyeSight sees the road through it. Verify with a glass shop or mechanic that the new windshield was installed and the cameras calibrated correctly.
