Symptom: A clunk, pop, or knock you feel through the steering wheel when turning, especially at low speed or while parking.

Likely causes

  1. Intermediate shaft. Toyota's bulletin points to the steering intermediate shaft and calls for replacing both upper and lower shafts with updated parts.
  2. Look-alikes. Worn tie rods, sway bar links, or struts can sound similar.

RAV4World owners have posted step-by-step shaft replacements.

Cost

We don't yet have consistent cost reports. The part is relatively inexpensive, and the labor is moderate.

DIY or shop?

DIY-capable with care. Keep the wheels straight and lock the steering wheel so the airbag clock spring isn't damaged. Otherwise, use a shop.

Useful steps

  1. Have someone turn the wheel while you listen and feel near the column under the dash.
  2. Ask for T-SB-0318-08 or the updated part numbers.
  3. Check the front suspension at the same time.

Safety / mechanic note

Steering parts are safety-critical. Verify with a mechanic after any DIY steering work, and get an alignment check.
